After their 1998 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks made headlines by signing free agent pitcher Randy Johnson. The club's new acquisition did not disappoint, going 17-9 with a 2.48 ERA and winning the National League Cy Young Award. The Diamondbacks went on to win 100 games and capture the NL West division title. However, the team's season came to a close as they lost to the New York Mets in the NLDS .
