2013 Amateur Draft
(Redirected from 2013 amateur draft)
Not all 30 teams had a pick in the first round, as certain teams were deprived of their pick as a result of signing a prime free agent. All teams that lost such a free agent were given a pick in the "compensation round" held after the first round, instead of taking over a pick of the team that had signed the player. The system was changed under the most recent collective bargaining agreement in order to make compensation for losing a top free agent more equitable: in the past, team A could receive a pick in the middle of the first round proper as compensation while team B received a pick much later in the draft order, in spite of losing players of comparable value.
In 2013, a "Competitive Balance Round" was instituted after the first and second rounds. Teams were eligible for a lottery pick for the round if they played in one of the smallest 10 markets, ranked in the bottom 10 in revenue, or received revenue sharing. These draft picks were the only picks that could be traded, and the Pittsburgh Pirates were the first to take advantage of that possibility, in a deal with the Miami Marlins for Gaby Sanchez.
