The 2022 Texas Rangers opened the season with a thoroughly re-vamped line-up: of the 10 players who started the game against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 8th, only three had been on the roster at the start of the 2021 season: 1B Nathaniel Lowe, CF Adolis Garcia and DH Willie Calhoun - and Lowe and Garcia were brand new memebrs of the team (Garcia had played all of 3 games with Texas in 2020). Another, 3B Andy Ibanez had been called up during the season, and all the others had been acquired over the winter. The keystone tandem of SS Corey Seager and 2B Marcus Semien had both been signed to huge free agent contracts, while SP Jon Gray, RF Kole Calhoun and LF Brad Miller were also free agents, albeit somewhat less expensive ones. Finally, C Mitch Garver came via a trade. Of course, after losing over 100 games the previous season, the Rangers needed to make some changes, and the moves certainly created some enthusiasm around the team, although there were still a lot of questions about the quality of the pitching staff after Gray. In any case, the Rangers got off to a great start, as Miller opened the season by homering off Jose Berrios, setting the tone for a four-run 1st inning. Garver then followed with a two-run homer in the 2nd. However, their weak pitching came back to bite them as the Jays climbed out of a 7-0 hole, scoring in each of their last five turns at bat, to end up 10-8 winners.
