61 is the number of home runs hit in 1961 by Roger Maris of the New York Yankees, to break Babe Ruth's record of 60 set in 1927. Maris's record would stand until surpassed in 1998 by Mark McGwire who finished with 70. However, given that the players who broke Maris's record were all suspected of being steroids users, many observers consider that 61 remains the true and untainted seasonal record.
The number is also part of the title of a movie by Billy Crystal: 61*.
