Team History[edit]
The Augusta GreenJackets, formerly of the South Atlantic League, briefly in Low-A East, and now in the Carolina League, are part of a market baseball history that dates to 1884 and includes the legendary Ty Cobb's 1904 professional debut. The Atlanta Braves farmhands play their home games at SRP Park in North Augusta, SC.
The 'Jackets have played under their current name since 1994, in spite of moving to another state during that span; prior to that, they were the Augusta Pirates from 1988 through 1993.
MLB's 2021 Minor League Reorganization switched the long-time San Francisco Giants' affiliate into the Braves' system - who at the time owned all their other farm teams. All four 2021 Atlanta farm teams are among those Endeavor Group Holdings acquired the following December and put under its newly created Diamond Baseball Holdings subsidiary. However, Endeavor's announcement differentiates that it will "operate" the Braves' teams, suggesting something other than an outright sale.[1] Endeavor also owns Ultimate Fighting Championship and Miss Universe.
Ripken Baseball, led by Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken, Jr., bought the GreenJackets in 2005. They became RB's second minor league team, and Cal at the time stated a goal of buying 10 teams in 10 years. RB later bought a third but has since sold all but the first - the Aberdeen IronBirds, who play in his home town of Aberdeen, MD.
The GreenJackets captured league championships in 1989, 1995, 1999 and 2008.
