Most of his teams finished over .500, with the 1879 Providence Grays winning the pennant with a record of 59-25. Teammates on that team included player-manager George Wright, Jim O'Rourke, Paul Hines, Bobby Mathews, John Ward and Joe Start.
Hague was on the Louisville team of 1877 but went down with an injury, which allowed George Hall to recommend Al Nichols to replace Hague. Hall and Nichols as well as a couple other players were thereafter involved in a big scandal.
