Charles "Gibby" Gibson must have been a promising catcher because manager Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics, a former catcher himself, chose him for the team in 1924. Gibson had previously been at Auburn University and had also been a successful hitter for the 1922 Lincoln Links, albeit playing mostly outfield.
While in the majors, Gibby was in one game in May, one in June, four in July and six in August. He continued to play in the minors through 1930, when he hit .311 for the Baton Rouge Highlanders.
He was the quarterback for the Auburn University football team in 1921-1922.
