Clay Condrey holds the distinction of being the latest-drafted player to make it to the major leagues. He was a 94th round pick by the New York Yankees in the 1996 amateur draft, a round long since defunct. He never signed with the Yankees; joining the San Diego Padres as an amateur free agent two years later by a little known scout named Theo Epstein. Clay pitched 18 times for the Pads over two seasons before re-emerging with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2006, holding down a role in their bullpen the next four seasons. Condrey's best season was his World Series year, finishing 3-4, 3.26 in 56 games in 2008, appearing in the NLDS and NLCS but spectating as the Phils beat the Tampa Bay Rays in the Fall Classic.
