Anderson was born, and died, in Chester, not far from Philadelphia. He was in the majors with the 1889 Philadelphia Quakers before he turned 21. The next season, he appeared in three games for the team and 13 more with the 1890 Pittsburgh Alleghenys. He also spent part of 1890 with Wilmington, and was with Lebanon (PA) in 1891. Dave worked one game as a fill-in umpire in 1890.
Sporting Life in June 1890 stated Anderson signed with Newark (NJ), but it is not clear if he ever appeared with them. In 1894, it was announced that a David Anderson would be treasurer of the Gloucester City Base Ball Club. This was apparently Gloucester, NJ, south of Philadelphia. He is not to be confused with Dave (C.) Anderson, who played around 100 years later.
