Desmond Beatty undoubtedly got the nickname "Desperate Desmond" because there was a popular comic strip of that name shortly before he came to the majors. Desmond hit .337 for the Poughkeepsie Honey Bugs in 1914, and then came up at the end of the major league season for two games with the New York Giants under manager John McGraw. Desmond was 21, nearly the youngest player on the team. He played shortstop and third base, tough positions at which to impress McGraw, who had played third and shortstop when he was a player.
