Dmitry Shlyapnikov played for the USSR national team in the 1990 Goodwill Games. In the 1991 Intercontinental Cup, he went 2 for 17 with two walks and played error-free ball in left field for the Soviets. He later became a Lieutenant Colonel in the Russian Air Force. He coached for the Russian national team in the 2003 European Championship and managed them in the 2007 European Championship.
