Murphy was acquired by the Oakland Athletics after the 2006 season from Kansas City, where he had played in the majors in 2004-05.
Murphy played for the Wichita Wranglers in 2006 finding himself on the disabled list twice. He had 14 home runs with a .249 average in 94 games.
Not really known for his power - he had hit 18 homers in seven big league seasons by that point - Murphy went on a long ball spree soon after being called up by the Chicago Cubs on August 4, 2013, after starting the year with the AAA Iowa Cubs. Starting at third base, he hit a three-run homer against Kyle Kendrick of the Philadelphia Phillies on August 6th, then added a pair of homers the next day, off Cole Hamels and Justin De Fratus, driving in four runs. The second homer came with two outs and two on in the 9th and gave the Cubs a 5-2 win over the Phillies.
Murphy became a coach with the Lansing Lugnuts in 2016-2017, Dunedin Blue Jays in 2018, and New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2019. He was scheduled to become a manager for the Dunedin Blue Jays in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to Covid-19. Murphy was the manager of the Vancouver Canadians in 2021.
