Biographical Information[edit]

Ed Cogswell, born in England, played three seasons in the major leagues. He played with Manchester from 1877-1879, and came up for 49 games with the Boston Red Caps (who played 84 games that year). Cogswell's .322 batting average was second-best among the position-players, although his power was only ordinary. The following year, he moved to the Troy Trojans, the second year of their existence as a major league team. Even though the team finished only 41-42, it had five future Hall of Famers on it, none of whom was older than 23. Cogswell hit .301, second-best among the regulars (he was beaten out by Roger Connor, who hit .332). Cogswell finished his career with 13 games for the 1882 Worcester Ruby Legs, hitting only .137.
