Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Gorkys Hernandez reached the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012.

Hernandez was signed by Detroit Tigers scout Ramon Pena in 2005 and made his pro debut that summer with the DSL Tigers. He made his American debut the following summer with the GCL Tigers, for whom he hit .327 with 5 home runs and 27 stolen bases and was named a Gulf Coast League All-Star. In 2007, he was with the West Michigan Whitecaps and was named Midwest League MVP after hitting .293 with 4 homers, 50 RBIs, and 54 steals.

Following the 2007 season, Hernandez was traded to the Atlanta Braves in the deal that brought Edgar Renteria to Detroit. Hernandez was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts in the 2008 Futures Game as a RF/LF for the World team. He hit 9th in the order. In the second, he struck out against Trevor Cahill. In the 5th, he hit a liner back to pitcher Will Inman. Hernandez struck out facing Casey Weathers in the 8th. In the 9th against Kevin Pucetas, he hit into a double play, erasing baserunner Che-Hsuan Lin.

On July 31, 2012, the Pittsburgh Pirates traded Hernandez to the Miami Marlins along with a 2012 first-round draft pick in return for 1B Gaby Sanchez and minor league pitcher Kyle Kaminska. On July 22, 2013, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals for minor league shortstop Alex McClure.
