John Sidney McCain III

Biographical Information[edit]

The 2008 Republican nominee for United States President, and Senior Arizona Senator, John McCain was a Senator from 1987 until his death from a brain tumor in 2018. Before that, he had been a pilot in the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War and having been shot down, captured and tortured by the North Vietnamese. He was also a member of the House of Representatives from 1983 to 1987 before being elected to the Senate. In the 2008 presidential election, he lost to Barack Obama.

By 2004, McCain had become one of the most outspoken Congressional critics of Major League Baseball's steroid policies - or lack thereof. In December of 2004, he threatened to introduce legislation imposing drug testing standards on professional athletes if baseball players and owners did not adopt a strong policy on steroids. He famously told Donald Fehr that baseball "is about to become a fraud" over the steroids issue.

McCain has stated numerous times that his favorite player of all time was Ted Williams, not only for his abilities and service to his country, but mostly for his independent nature. He has been known to take in an Arizona Diamondbacks game during down time.
