Biographical Information[edit]

Kent Mercker had lofty expectations to live up to, as the 5th pick and first high schooler taken in the 1986 amateur draft. He was taken after Jeff King, Greg Swindell, Matt Williams and Kevin Brown and right before Gary Sheffield. Mercker ranked 4th in all of the National League in 1992 in holding lead-off hitters to a .183 batting average.

After verbal run-ins with Chicago Cubs announcer Steve Stone in 2004, he left the Cubs as a free agent and signed with the Cincinnati Reds.

In retirement, he became an accomplished pickleball player, taking part in the U.S. national championships in 2022.
