Leon Brinkopf was one of several shortstops given on a chance with the 1952 Chicago Cubs. The Cubs tried out various players until they settled on Ernie Banks in 1954. In the minors, Leon played parts of four seasons for the Los Angeles Angels and parts of three seasons for the Des Moines Bruins, as well as for a few other teams. Brinkopf went to Southeast Missouri State University in the 1950-51 offseason.
A 2007 article said he became a long-time legendary high school coach. His baseball career ended because of a back injury, and he wore a back brace for years. He served in the Marines.
