The MGM-owned Beau Rivage casino leased the land to the city for $1 a year in exchange for two considerations: a city-built parking garage for BR employees who had used the land as a parking lot, and the right to name the resulting stadium. Why "MGM" rather than "Beau Rivage" Park? To avoid tying gambling to baseball.
Its history hasn't been as idyllic as its setting. A contracting soap opera pushed the former Huntsville Stars' 2015 move nearly halfway into the season, and the certificate of occupancy was issued the very day of the first game. There have also been disputes over revenue from signage and non-Shucker events.
