Mariano Rivera Award

The Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year Award was introduced by Major League Baseball in 2014, following the retirement of Mariano Rivera at the end of the 2013 season, replacing the Rolaids Relief Award, which was discontinued after the 2012 season, and the Delivery Man of the Year Award. Its aim is to honor the best relief pitcher in the American League. There is a parallel Trevor Hoffman Award, given out to the best reliever in the National League.

The Award is voted on by a committee of 9 former elite relief pitchers. They are Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman, the two awards' namesakes, as well as Dennis Eckersley, Rollie Fingers, Rich Gossage and Bruce Sutter - the four living relievers in the Hall of Fame, Hoyt Wilhelm having passed away - and John Franco, Lee Smith and Billy Wagner.

The first award was handed out after the 2014 season, with Greg Holland of the Kansas City Royals the first winner. In 2017, Craig Kimbrel became the first pitcher to have won both the Mariano Rivera and the Trevor Hoffman Award.
