Mario Lemieux is considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of the National Hockey League; some contend he ranks #1. A fan favorite for decades with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he then became a part owner of the Penguins - while still active as a player. Lemieux's involvement in baseball included part-ownership of the Altoona Curve and State College Spikes with Chuck Greenberg, later owner of the Texas Rangers. In 2009, Lemieux and fellow Penguins owner Ron Burkle made an offer to Bob Nutting to buy the Pittsburgh Pirates but were turned down.
Lemieux was an outstanding junior baseball player in his youth, in addition to playing hockey, but obviously had to give up the summer sport very early, as NHL stardom was already predicted for him when he had barely turned 16. His brother Alain Lemieux also played in the NHL, with considerably less success.
