Biographical Information[edit]

Martin Mullen was the first Cleveland-born player to come to the major leagues (if you consider the National Association a major league), which he did in 1872 with the National Association. Hugh Reid was born earlier than Martin, but Martin came first to the National Association. Mullen went 0 for 4 with a run in his only big league game and made 3 errors in 5 chances in the outfield.

Mullen was an amateur player who was given the chance to play when Rynie Wolters was unable to continue after he swallowed his chaw of tobacco. He was apparently a top amateur player of the time.
