Biographical Information[edit]
Mert Hackett (Mortimer Martin Hackett) was born on November 11, 1859 in Cambridge, MA. He made his Major League debut on May 2, 1883 for the Boston Beaneaters. In 1883, his rookie year, he hit .235 with 2 home runs and 24 RBI. Hackett played for Boston, the Kansas City Cowboys and the Indianapolis Hoosiers over the course of his 5-year major league career. He also umpired one National League game in 1886.
After baseball, Mert Hackett was a policeman in Cambridge for 42 years. He is the brother of Walter Hackett and a cousin of John Clarkson, Walter Clarkson and Dad Clarkson. The press often called him Mertie.
