NYSEG stadium in April 2009

Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton, NY, is the home of the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the New York Mets' Eastern League farm team. It lost the 2020 Eastern League All-Star Game as well as the season to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Opened in 1992 as Binghamton Municipal Stadium, it brought the former Williamsport Bills to the Southern Tier. The Mets bought the Bills the year before in a sale Bills' majority owner Marvin Goldklang - a minority owner of the New York Yankees - said was forced by the 1990 Professional Baseball Agreement. The ballpark became NYSEG Stadium when New York State Electric and Gas bought rights in 2001. NYSEG didn't renew after the 2020 season that never was, and Mirabito Energy Products took over in May 2021.

In between, the aging ballpark underwent a thorough renovation that without doubt saved professional baseball for its city. MLB's 2021 Minor League Reorganization reduced the minors by a net of 40 franchises, but within those cuts the net change in each of the 11 surviving circuits had to be an even number. The two lists that leaked did so in late 2019. Nearly identical, both lists included the Ponies and the Erie SeaWolves. Perennially being the EL's bottom two in attendance made them logical candidates, and depending when they made the list their stadiums may have moved them from logical to obvious. Both could have been described as aging facilities past their prime; now, neither can be.

Based on media reports, each thinks it saved the other under the need for two. Perhaps a grudge series on a non-geographical basis?
