Philadelphia Blue Jays
After purchasing the Philadelphia Phillies, new owner Bob Carpenter thought he could rebrand the perennial losers in Philadelphia by renaming the club.
Before the 1943 season, he held a contest to rename the club. The winner received $100 and season tickets. After two seasons going 64-90 and 61-92, Carpenter returned the Phillies name to the club. The last surviving player from the Philadelphia Blue Jays era was Putsy Caballero, who died in 2016.
