Biographical Information

Spencer Abbott began his playing career as a pitcher but became a first baseman after injuring his arm in 1901. He began his managerial career in 1903 and spent the next decade as a skipper for various minor league clubs. He was a Western League umpire for part of the 1915 season before leaving baseball to become assistant police chief of Topeka, Kansas.

Abbott returned to the diamond to manage the Tulsa Oilers in 1919 and led them to two championships in two years at the helm. He then was skipper of the Memphis Chicks for the next two seasons, winning a Southern Association crown in 1921. Overall, he was a minor league manager for 34 seasons between 1903 and 1947, compiling a record of 2,180-2,037.

Abbott was Washington Senators coach in 1935 and scouted for the club late in his life.
