August 13: Today's featured birthday is that of Gary Cooper, who turns 58.
- 1931 - Lefty Grove wins the 1931 American League MVP Award after his 7th consecutive season leading the American League in strikeouts. He also led in ERA, victories, winning percentage and complete games during a 31-4 campaign.
- 1989 - The Kintetsu Buffaloes drop their fourth straight game to blow a 3 games to 0 lead to begin the 1989 Japan Series. Isao Koda wins game 7 by a 8-5 margin while three Yomiuri Giants batters homer.
- 1994 - Hiromi Makihara wins his second game of the 1994 Japan Series, 3-1, to give the Yomiuri Giants the Series in 6 games over the Seibu Lions. Henry Cotto homers, while Kimiyasu Kudoh takes the loss.
- 2001 - Bud Selig announces that Major League Baseball will be forced to contract by two teams by the beginning of the 2002 season. Selig's claims prove false and as of fourteen years later, not one team has folded.
- 2008 - The Phillies only need to play 3 innings to win the 2008 World Series as they conclude a rain-suspended Game Five. It is the second World Series title in franchise history. Cole Hamels (pictured) is named Series MVP.
