Toshio Saito was a 10th round draft pick of the Yokohama BayStars in 2005 after he had played for Mitsubishi Motors Okazaki. He made his Nippon Pro Baseball debut in 2008, going 7 for 39 with a walk, 2 runs, 2 RBI and 13 strikeouts, being used as a backup catcher. His first career hit came off Masayuki Hasegawa.

In 2009, Saito went 5 for 24 with a double, walk, 9 strikeouts, run and 2 RBI in 20 games. He was then traded with Takumi Nasuno to the Chiba Lotte Marines for Naoyuki Shimizu.
