Catcher Vernon Mackie played minor league ball from 1931 to 1947, missing the 1943-1945 seasons. Mackie played in the International League in 1935-1936, American Association in 1939-1940, and Texas League in 1936-1938, yet never made the majors.
Mackie served 37 months in the armed forces . He was associated with the railroad industry for many years and left baseball in 1949 to concentrate his efforts there. He returned to baseball early that year, but left again after the season when he was given an ultimatum by the railroads.
