You Gotta Have Wa
Robert Whiting's book You Gotta Have Wa is recognized as the foremost book on Nippon Pro Baseball written in English. Coming out in 1989, it arrived at a time when American interest in Japanese baseball was rising and helped spur this trend onwards. While some of the material is now dated, it remains an excellent reference. Whiting's main focus was on the difference in cultures between Japanese and American baseball teams, with the former's focus on group cohesiveness and unity. The book deals primarily with how Japanese teams have dealt with American players and vice versa.
The title is taken from the line "You gotta have heart", taken from the song "Heart" from the musical Damn Yankees.
