Biographical Information[edit]

Young-pyo Ko has pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization and for the South Korean national team. His brother Jang-hyuk Ko also played in the KBO. [1]

Ko was on the South Korean team in the 2013 East Asian Games, starting the Gold Medal Game but serving up a grand slam to Hotaka Yamakawa. [2] He was a first-round pick of the kt Wiz in the 2014 KBO draft. He was 3-4 with a 5.68 ERA in 46 games as a rookie in 2015 and 2-4, 5.59 in 53 games the next year (albeit with 62 K in 56 1/3 IP).

Moving to the rotation in 2017, he was 8-12 with a 5.08 ERA and 125 K to 16 BB in 141 2/3 IP. He tied for 2nd in the league in losses, three behind Donn Roach. In 2018, he was steady at 6-9, 5.13 with 134 K to 25 BB in 142 IP. His ground ball/fly ball ratio was 2.58:1 led the league. [3] He then missed a couple seasons, presumably due to serving out his mandatory military commitment.

He began 2021 with his best performances yet, then made South Korea's team for the Tokyo Olympics. [4]
